International Space Station over the planet Earth

SPACE

Space is a multi-billion pound global industry, set to grow massively in the future. And with that, comes great career opportunities.

The space industry is diverse, spanning everything from spaceports and launchers, through to satellite design and manufacture, and data analytics. The industry even needs its own space lawyers (yes, really) as well as science communicators to spread the word on developments and discoveries in the sector. (Check out Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman and Michio Kaku to see what science communicators have done so far.)

Space career opportunities are increasing rapidly. There are now over 130 space organisations in Scotland alone, with Glasgow the largest centre of small satellite manufacture in Europe. Space is one of the most dynamic industries you could work in. Why not start choosing your own space path now?

DID YOU KNOW?

David Bowie’s iconic ‘Space Oddity’ has actually been sung in space. It was covered on the International Space Station by Colonel Chris Hadfield in 2013. The song was first released in 1969 as an ode to space travel. Bet even Bowie couldn’t have imagined it being performed all those years later by an astronaut while orbiting the earth.

The first woman in space was only 26. Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was the first and youngest woman to go into space in 1963. She is the only woman to have been on a solo space mission and orbited the Earth almost 50 times in three days on Vostok 6. She also passed through Prestwick Airport while on a UK visit in 1963!
